Kit kids are a class act
Published: Sunday 7th August 2011
Lanarkshire's 'kit kids' are just some of the young unsung heroes helping at the Games.
These young volunteers, many already members of running clubs, are helping the world's top young athletes. They usher them to the track and ensure they've got their essential kit, before returning it to a safe place until after the athletes have raced.
As well as carrying out their track duties they have been getting to know some of the athletes and are finding out first-hand what it is like to compete at this level.
We spoke to some of them. Brothers Luke, 13, and Matthew, 10, are delighted to help out. Both are keen runners with East Kilbride Running Club and are pleased they played their part.
Luke said: "My mum encouraged my brother and I to become volunteers at the games. I've really enjoyed it and it has been great to see some the athletes in action. My brother and I both enjoy long-distance running and it would be great to be part of an event like this in the future."
And 11-year-olds Fern Hughes and Eilidh Hagerty who are both members of Airdrie Harriers also had a great time. They are both keen supporters of Team Lanarkshire and have cheered on all of the area's top athletes.
They train twice a week and are committed to running, adding that they too would love to be professional athletes and represent their country at future top events.
